Murray State University will continue its Humanities+ Series on March 5 with a presentation titled “Shifting Landscapes: A Photographic Chronicle of Humanity and Nature in western Kentucky.” The event, which is open to the public at no cost, will take place at 4 p.m. in Faculty Hall.
The project behind the presentation is supported by funding from the Kentucky Art Council and the Kentucky Historical Society. It features archival materials and photography that document changes in both the environment and society of western Kentucky. According to organizers, the session aims to promote discussions about natural history, cultural heritage, conservation, and sustainability.
Dr. Kate He, professor in Murray State’s Department of Biological Sciences, will co-present at the event. Dr. He holds degrees in Plant Biology from Northeast Forestry University in China and a Ph.D. in Quantitative Ecology from Western University in Canada. Her research centers on plant ecology using statistical analysis to understand patterns over time and space. In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses such as Botany and Conservation Biology, Dr. He mentors student researchers and has had her nature photography featured internationally.
Cintia Segovia Figueroa, assistant professor of art at Murray State, will also participate as a presenter. Originally from Mexico City with experience in the entertainment industry there, Segovia Figueroa explores themes like immigration and bilingualism through her photographic work. She earned advanced degrees from California State University campuses at Northridge and Long Beach. Her artwork has been acquired by institutions such as the Museum of Latin American Art and exhibited globally at venues including museums in South Carolina, California, Mexico City, Shanghai University, and others.
The Humanities+ Series is sponsored by Murray State’s College of Humanities and Fine Arts. The program seeks to foster creative opportunities while highlighting achievements across faculty, students, alumni, as well as visiting professionals within arts and social sciences fields through lectures, workshops, and cultural events focused on skills for contemporary life.
