Dr. Brittany Wood, an assistant professor of political science at Murray State University, has been named the recipient of the 19th annual University Distinguished Mentor Award. The announcement was made in February by an intercampus committee.

The award recognizes faculty who have a significant impact on students’ education, careers, and lives. According to Dr. Amanda Joyce, professor in the Psychology Department and chair of the awards committee, “It makes sense that Murray State would have strong competition for this award because our faculty are deeply committed to supporting students and their learning, both inside and outside of the classroom. Dr. Wood should take great pride in rising to the top of such a talented pool of candidates.”

Eight faculty members were nominated for this year’s award. The selection process considered factors such as student research involvement and scholarly achievements like publications and presentations.

Akayla Henson, a recent graduate from Murray State University, commented on her experience with Dr. Wood: “She went above and beyond…Because of her mentorship, I had the opportunity to co-author and publish research, an achievement that significantly strengthened my graduate school applications and prepared me for the work of academia.”

Mary Huffman, another student mentee, said: “Even amongst her laudable peers, Dr. Wood stands out. In all things, she sets an example of professionalism and personability while challenging students to take risks and engage more deeply with their education.”

Upon receiving news of the award, Dr. Wood stated: “I am honored and grateful to receive the University Distinguished Mentor Award. This recognition is especially meaningful because it reflects the incredible students I have the privilege to work with. Supporting their intellectual growth, confidence and ambitions is the most rewarding part of my job.”

The award will be presented at Murray State’s Faculty Recognition Banquet on April 16 during Spring Scholars Week celebrations. As part of this honor, Dr. Wood will receive a $1,000 stipend and her name will be added to a permanent plaque in the Provost Office.

The Office of Research and Creative Activity coordinates this annual recognition along with the Provost Office at Murray State University. Nominations for next year’s award are expected by late January 2027; further details can be found at murraystate.edu/ORCA.
