WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) delivered a heartfelt tribute today on the Senate floor following the passing of Senator Dianne Feinstein. McConnell expressed his condolences and highlighted the remarkable legacy left behind by his dear colleague and friend.
McConnell began by reminiscing about his personal friendship with Feinstein and her late husband, Dick. "Elaine and I were actual friends of Dick and Dianne. Elaine served on a corporate board with Dick for a number of years. When they were in town together, we would frequently have dinner together," he shared.
The Kentucky Senator also reflected on a sentimental gift given to him and his wife by Feinstein. "Dianne gave us a small depiction of the Capitol. I looked at it this morning because it’s still on the wall and remembered our dear colleague as a truly remarkable individual," McConnell revealed.
Recognizing Feinstein's trailblazing career, McConnell praised her as the longest-serving female Senator in American history. "Dianne was a trailblazer, and her beloved home state of California and our entire nation are better for her dogged advocacy and diligent service," he acknowledged.
Feinstein's impact extended beyond her extensive tenure in the Senate. McConnell noted her pivotal role as the head of the Intelligence Committee and the Judiciary Committee, where she spearheaded sensitive and consequential work. Her name became synonymous with advocacy for women's rights and her involvement in critical issues such as water infrastructure and counter-drug efforts.
Prior to her Senate career, Feinstein made history as the first woman to lead her hometown's board of supervisors and later served as the mayor of San Francisco. McConnell applauded her achievements, stating, "And as much as this institution, and the American people, will remember Dianne's devoted public service, Elaine and I will also remember and cherish the friendship we were fortunate to share with Dianne and Dick."
McConnell concluded his remarks by expressing solidarity with Feinstein's staff and extending his thoughts and prayers to her daughter Katherine, granddaughter Eileen, the entire Feinstein family, and all who mourn the loss of their dear colleague and friend.
