U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has called on Congress to pass a short-term funding extension and prevent a federal government shutdown before the deadline tomorrow night. Speaking on the Senate floor, McConnell emphasized the negative consequences of a shutdown and urged his colleagues to take the opportunity to keep essential government functions running and address pressing issues.
"Shutting down the government doesn't help anybody politically. It doesn't make any meaningful progress on policy. And it heaps unnecessary hardships on the American people. As well as the brave men and women who keep us safe," McConnell stated.
Highlighting the efforts of lawmakers who share his concerns, McConnell expressed his encouragement for the work being done to strengthen the pending legislation and avoid the disastrous effects of a shutdown. He stressed the importance of paying servicemembers, border security personnel, and other essential workers, while also ensuring that vital government functions continue uninterrupted.
McConnell also emphasized the need to keep the lights on in order to facilitate ongoing discussions on critical issues such as addressing the border crisis, delivering disaster relief, supporting Ukraine, and curbing reckless spending.
"Congress has an opportunity right now... And I would urge our colleagues to take that opportunity," McConnell urged.
As the deadline looms, it remains to be seen whether Congress will come together to pass the funding extension and prevent a government shutdown.
