U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell delivered a powerful speech on the Senate floor, emphasizing the importance of supporting allies in the face of global challenges. McConnell warned against the tendency to forget the existence of evil in the world and the need for strong leadership.

McConnell referenced the phrase "holiday from history," which was coined by George Will in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks. He highlighted how this phrase resonated when Russia escalated its invasion of Ukraine and how it remains relevant today.

He expressed concern about the growing voices on both the left and right that question America's role as a global leader. McConnell stressed that America cannot afford to decline and assume that history will not be interested in them. He noted that many of their allies are waking up to their own commitments to collective defense.

McConnell pointed to the challenges faced by Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan as examples of countries that cannot take a holiday from history. He highlighted Israel's need for vigilant self-defense against those who seek to wipe it off the map. He emphasized Ukraine's all-out resistance against an authoritarian thug who has butchered its people and carved up its territory. He also mentioned Taiwan's need to confront the threat from a communist superpower.

The Republican leader drew attention to the strategic alignment between authoritarian forces and their shared interest in undermining the West, especially America. He criticized the Obama Administration for welcoming Russia's intervention in Syria, which gave Russia influence in the Middle East at America's expense. McConnell also highlighted Iran's support for Russia's war against their friends in Europe.

He warned that China is becoming more directly involved and mentioned the PRC's "Belt and Road Initiative" as a massive influence operation aimed at increasing Beijing's control over the world. McConnell noted China's coordination with and support for Iran, as well as their condemnation of Israel's self-defense operations.

McConnell stressed the interconnectedness of the challenges posed by adversaries and emphasized the need for the United States to stand with its allies. He highlighted Israel's right to defend itself, Ukraine's right to sovereignty, and Taiwan's right to self-determination. McConnell argued that America, as a global superpower, has global responsibilities and cannot afford to take a holiday from history.

He concluded by calling for strong and decisive action from the Senate, including maximum support for Israel's self-defense, equipping Ukraine for victory, and helping Taiwan deter growing threats. McConnell emphasized the importance of alliances and credibility, stating that America's prosperity is the result of its leadership and that preserving it requires standing with friends and investing in its own strength.
