U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) criticized the Biden Administration's approach to national security priorities, particularly in relation to the Iran-backed Houthi group. McConnell questioned why the Biden Administration removed the Houthis from the terrorist list and took so long to acknowledge the reality of their terror activities. He highlighted the group's motto, which includes "Death to America" and "Death to Israel," and emphasized that they have been a sustained threat to U.S. military and commercial ships in the Red Sea.

McConnell acknowledged that it is a positive step that President Biden authorized strikes against the Houthis, but he criticized the administration's response as hesitant, half-measured, and conflicted over the risks of escalation. McConnell stressed that it is Iran that should fear the costs of escalation, not the United States and its allies. He called for Iran to understand that its support for terrorism and attacks on America's interests will result in military responses and devastating economic pressure from the international community.

The Senate Republican Leader also questioned the effectiveness of President Biden's initial efforts, noting that multiple rounds of strikes against Houthi missiles were necessary within a week, indicating that the desired message to Tehran or its proxies was not conveyed. McConnell expressed concern that Iran, as the world's most active state sponsor of terrorism, believes that the United States lacks the resolve to respond with strength, which encourages them to continue their aggression.

McConnell emphasized that America cannot hope to deter aggression with weakness and called for serious investment in capabilities and capacity to address the current threats from Moscow, Beijing, Tehran, and Pyongyang. He stressed that our adversaries understand the language of strength and that America cannot afford to be weak in the face of these challenges.

In conclusion, McConnell's remarks highlighted the need for the Biden Administration to make adversaries fear the costs of escalating violence. He called for a stronger response to Iran-backed terrorism and emphasized the importance of investing in the capabilities to meet the challenges posed by our adversaries.
