U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) criticized the Democrats' prescription drug socialism on the Senate floor. McConnell referred to the so-called Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which includes a price fixing mechanism that puts pressure on drug manufacturers. He stated, "Calling this price fixing scheme a negotiation is like calling a bank robbery a transaction!"
McConnell explained that the IRA requires drug companies to agree to a "maximum fair price" determined by unelected bureaucrats in a government agency. If they refuse, they face a hefty excise tax or would be forced to withdraw from participation in the Medicaid and Medicare programs. Several drug makers have sued the government over these requirements, arguing that they violate the takings clause.
In response to the lawsuits, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont called the CEOs of these companies to testify before the Senate HELP Committee. McConnell suggested that Sanders' intentions were not to negotiate or conduct oversight, but rather to punish the CEOs for suing the government.
McConnell emphasized that the ultimate victims of this price fixing scheme are the patients who will never receive life-saving treatments. He cited an estimate that the incentives eliminated by this scheme could have provided nine times more funding for cancer research than Vice President Biden's Cancer Moonshot initiative.
The Republican leader concluded by stating that socialism doesn't work and that the government cannot magically lower prices. He urged the Democrats to reconsider their taxing and spending policies, which he believes have created an economy that is failing innovators, patients, and working families.
In summary, McConnell criticized the Democrats' prescription drug socialism, calling it a price fixing scheme. He argued that the ultimate victims are the patients who miss out on life-saving treatments and emphasized that socialism doesn't work.
