WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has expressed concern over the ongoing threats posed by America's adversaries in a recent speech on the Senate floor. McConnell highlighted various incidents that demonstrate the undeterred nature of these adversaries and their willingness to target American interests.
Referring to a recent deadly attack on a base housing U.S. personnel in Syria, McConnell stated, "Yesterday, Iran-backed terrorists carried out another deadly attack on a base that houses U.S. personnel in Syria." He also raised concerns about the Iran-backed Houthis and their continuous threats to U.S. vessels and international shipping in the Red Sea.
McConnell further emphasized the need for a strong response from the United States, saying, "Iran and its proxies are demonstrating that their particular calculus had not changed. The President said on Friday that our adversaries should know that, quote ‘If you harm an American, we will respond.’ Well, by their actions, our adversaries are turning the President’s words back around. They’re essentially saying: ‘We will attack America at times and places of our choosing.'"
The Senate Republican Leader pointed out that America's adversaries, including Iran and its proxies, have shown no signs of being deterred by previous actions. He criticized the foreign policy of the past three years, which he described as defined by hesitation, half-measures, and self-deterrence. McConnell highlighted the need for a change in approach, stating, "President Biden has dug our credibility – the value of America’s word – into a hole."
McConnell also drew attention to the growing alignment and coordination between Russia and China, while America's credibility is being questioned. He quoted former National Security Advisor, retired Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster, who warned that the abandonment of Kyiv would embolden aggressors and erode trust in America. Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also emphasized the dangers of allowing Putin to prevail, stating that it would be "far more costly and dangerous."
In addition, McConnell referenced former National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien's support for supplemental security assistance to Israel, Taiwan, and Ukraine, stressing the importance of standing with allies and partners on the front lines. He warned that the challenges posed by autocrats and theocrats around the world cannot be ignored and require a clear strategy and firm resolve.
McConnell concluded his remarks by emphasizing the urgent need to take the growing threats seriously and invest in capabilities to address them. He warned, "Either we confront challenges with clear strategy and firm resolve, or we lose." McConnell reminded the Senate that America's adversaries will continue to target American personnel and interests and that the US-led global order must be protected.
As America's adversaries continue to pose serious threats, the remarks by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell highlight the importance of a strong and decisive response. The speech serves as a reminder that the United States must confront these challenges with clear strategy and firm resolve to protect American interests and maintain global peace and prosperity.
