WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) emphasized the importance of avoiding a government funding lapse in his recent address on the Senate floor. McConnell highlighted the impending deadline and the potential consequences of failing to act swiftly.

"As Congress returns to Washington this week, the deadline to avoid a partial lapse in government funding is fast approaching," McConnell stated, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

McConnell reiterated his stance on the detrimental effects of a government shutdown, stating, "shutting down the government is harmful to the country. And it never produces positive outcomes – on policy or politics." He also emphasized that a shutdown at this point is entirely preventable.

The Senate Republican Leader pointed out that there are existing solutions to avert a shutdown, citing previous full-year appropriations passed by the Senate and the House. McConnell expressed optimism that with concerted efforts, a shutdown can be avoided, allowing progress on annual appropriations to be made.

Highlighting the expectations of various segments of the population, McConnell mentioned, "American farmers and ranchers, like the Kentuckians visiting Washington this week, expect us to take the challenges they face in feeding our nation seriously." He also emphasized the commitment owed to veterans, stating, "Veterans who swore to protect and defend expect us to keep our promise to care for them when they return home."

McConnell concluded by stressing the importance of fulfilling Congress's responsibilities in the days ahead, stating, "In the coming days, we’ll need to do just that." He urged all stakeholders to work together towards clean appropriations and steer clear of contentious issues that could hinder progress.

As the deadline looms, McConnell's call for unity and prompt action serves as a reminder of the critical need to address funding issues efficiently to avoid disruptions to essential services.
