U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer have introduced a Senate Resolution urging the Taliban to release American citizen Ryan Corbett, who has been detained in Afghanistan without charge for nearly two years.
McConnell stated, "Our resolution reaffirms America’s commitment to freeing Ryan and raises the international stakes of the Taliban’s wrongful imprisonment of American citizens." He also emphasized the urgency of the situation, saying, "As long as Ryan sits in captivity, I will continue to call on the Biden Administration to do more to bring him home."
Ryan's wife, Anna, expressed gratitude for the support they have received, saying, "Ryan has been trapped in a basement cell, without charge, for more than 600 days, told over and over that his country has forgotten him. Today's resolution is proof that Ryan is not forgotten and that the chorus of those speaking out on his behalf is growing."
Drue Corbett, Ryan's father, shared the family's anguish over Ryan's prolonged captivity, stating, "As a father, there is nothing worse than seeing your child suffer. And Ryan has been suffering for far too long -- often alone, his health slipping away."
The resolution introduced by McConnell and Schumer aims to shed light on Ryan's plight and increase pressure on the Taliban to release him, highlighting the plight of an American citizen caught in a dire situation in Afghanistan.
