WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) addressed the Senate floor today regarding the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas, emphasizing the importance of upholding the Senate's obligations in the process.

McConnell began by highlighting the solemn responsibility of the Senate, stating, “The Senate just swore an oath to do impartial justice according to the Constitution and the laws of our country." He stressed that as a court of impeachment, the Senate's duty is to listen to the case presented and remain impartial.

Referring to the ongoing proceedings, McConnell pointed out the necessity for both the prosecution and the defense to present their arguments, stating, “At this point, in any trial in the country, the prosecution presents the evidence of the case. Counsel for the defense does the same. And the jury remains silent as it listens."

Expressing concern over the lack of opportunity for a fair trial, McConnell noted, “The Senate will not hear the House Managers present the details of their case against Secretary Mayorkas" and added, “Likewise, we will not hear the Secretary’s representatives present the vigorous defense to which he is entitled."

McConnell reminded his colleagues of the gravity of the impeachment process, urging them to consider the vision of the Framers of the Constitution, stating, “Our colleagues know that we are obligated to take these proceedings seriously. This is what our oath prescribes. It’s what history and the precedent require."

Highlighting the significance of the power of impeachment in maintaining the balance of the Constitutional system, McConnell emphasized that the process must not be abused or short-circuited, as it would not be judged favorably by history.

In conclusion, McConnell made a motion to table the point of order, emphasizing the importance of upholding the Senate's duty in the impeachment proceedings, stating, “Therefore I move to table the point of order and ask for the yays and nays."
