WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) delivered remarks today on the Senate floor concerning Israel's recent rescue operation of four hostages held by Hamas since October 7th.
“On Saturday, in a daring daytime raid, Israel rescued four innocent hostages who had suffered in Hamas captivity since October 7th," McConnell stated. He praised the mission as a product of careful planning that required "the utmost secrecy, professionalism, and bravery," noting that it resulted in the ultimate sacrifice for one elite commander.
McConnell emphasized that Israelis can take pride in their nation’s dedication to restoring security and delivering justice following brutal attacks last fall. He also highlighted the significant challenges that continue to threaten Israel’s sovereignty and peace prospects for both Israelis and Palestinians.
He pointed out that the operation exposed the extreme measures taken by terrorists to sow chaos and exploit suffering, raising uncomfortable questions about the broader complicity of some Palestinian civilians. “With the help of U.S. intelligence,” he said, “the Israeli forces’ mission led them not to the depths of Hamas terror tunnels but to the heart of a refugee camp run by the United Nations.”
The Senate Leader criticized Hamas for using civilians as human shields, stating: “These are...the terrorists who repeatedly deploy their weapons and combatants in or beneath schools, hospitals, and mosques.” He asserted that every drop of blood spilled during the operation is attributable to those who violated a ceasefire and took innocent hostages.
McConnell criticized Western media coverage for its portrayal of Israel's actions during the rescue operation. He claimed major publications focused more on criticizing Israel than on condemning Hamas' tactics. “Instead of outrage that a Hamas terrorist would exploit their profession as a cover for hostage-keeping,” he remarked, “major publications have directed their indignation at Israel.”
He also addressed reactions within the United States, describing protests in New York where demonstrators waved Hizballah flags and chanted anti-Israel slogans. He condemned these actions and questioned why no arrests were made during these events.
McConnell concluded by reiterating Israel's right to defend itself against terrorism: “Israel has a right to defend itself. Terrorists have no right to take innocent hostages. And they alone bear responsibility for the consequences of their actions.”
