U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) delivered remarks on the Senate floor today, addressing national security priorities and criticizing the Biden-Harris Administration's approach to handling America's adversaries.
"The partners, puppets, and proxies of America’s biggest adversaries spent a busy weekend repressing and killing innocent people," McConnell stated. He highlighted incidents in the Golan Heights where Hizballah launched an Iranian-made rocket that killed twelve Israeli Druze children, and in Venezuela where "the communist dictator hijacked an election."
McConnell expressed concern over what he perceives as increasing global repression and terrorist violence. He criticized the administration's response to these events, stating, "The Secretary of State says the Biden-Harris Administration has 'serious concerns that the result announced does not reflect the will or the votes of the Venezuelan people.'"
He continued by questioning whether the administration knows how to effectively alter the actions of America's adversaries. "Autocrats don’t care about disapproving looks from Western diplomats," he said, citing ongoing nuclear enrichment efforts by Tehran despite international condemnation.
McConnell also pointed out recent attacks on U.S. personnel by Iran-backed terrorists in Iraq and Syria, suggesting that current policies have failed to deter such aggression. He criticized President Biden for claiming that "the United States is not at war anywhere in the world," while American servicemembers remain deployed in conflict zones.
"In Secretary Blinken’s first public comment after Hizballah’s most recent strike, he insisted 'we don’t want to see it spread,'" McConnell noted. He argued that Israel continues to face threats from Hamas and other groups supported by Iran.
McConnell concluded his remarks by calling for stronger measures against Tehran and its proxies. "It is past time for civilized countries to present Tehran with cold consequences," he asserted.
