U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell addressed the Senate floor on the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hizballah. McConnell expressed cautious optimism about the cessation of hostilities but emphasized skepticism regarding the intentions of Iran and its proxies.
“It’s been a week since Israel and Hizballah agreed to a ceasefire. War is hell, and I hope sincerely that this marks a durable end to the immediate conflict," he stated. However, he cautioned, “But hope is not a strategy, and I know better than to expect honest dealing from hardened terrorists."
McConnell highlighted concerns about Iran's influence, stating, “It would be naïve enough a year and a half ago to believe Iran and its proxies had suddenly decided to accept Israel’s right to exist." He further remarked on the ongoing threat posed by Hizballah: "In light of the horrors of October 7th and the sustained campaign of terror since then, it’s more likely that Iran and its proxies mean to alleviate the pressure of Israel’s successful operations and give Hizballah – the A-team of international terrorism and the vanguard of Iran’s axis of anti-Semitic violence – a chance to catch its breath."
The Senator pointed out that the strength of this ceasefire will face tests in coming weeks. He questioned whether it would prevent Iran from resupplying Hizballah or enable Lebanon's leaders to escape Hizballah's control. He also questioned if it would allow northern Israeli residents to return home safely.
Reflecting on past events, McConnell criticized previous failures in enforcing UN Security Council resolutions: “Even with Lebanese Armed Forces and UN peacekeepers on the ground, Hizballah re-armed and Iranian influence reached deeper into Lebanon. Such a tragic farce must not be allowed to repeat itself."
He argued that regional powers must decide their stance towards peace or risk becoming "vassals of Iran." He called for U.S. support in ensuring Israel can defend itself effectively, suggesting actions such as restoring munitions stockpiles.
“But there’s a broader, more fundamental lesson I hope we’ll take away from Israel’s stunningly successful campaign against Hizballah – it’s about the credibility of threats," he noted. McConnell concluded by urging America to apply lessons learned from Israel's actions against Iran-backed groups attacking American forces.
“The evidence of coordination between our adversaries – China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea – is incontrovertible," he warned. “It’s high time that America’s support for our friends carried real weight.”
