U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell delivered remarks on the Senate floor, acknowledging Senator Mike Braun's departure from Washington to become Indiana's governor. McConnell highlighted Braun's popularity in Indiana, noting that residents are eager to have him back as their governor.
McConnell reflected on Braun's approach to life and work, quoting a local reporter who once asked Braun about his philosophy: "You live like you are going out of business every day and it makes you healthy." This mindset has contributed to Braun's professional success and kept him youthful, according to McConnell.
Braun, a former athlete and Harvard Business School graduate, chose an entrepreneurial path over a corporate career. He built a business in his hometown with his high-school sweetheart Maureen. Together, they raised four children while managing a successful national operation spread across 38 states.
Maureen played a pivotal role in steering Braun towards politics when she suggested he run for school board instead of her. This marked the beginning of Braun's political journey, which has now spanned two decades.
In the Senate, Braun was recognized as an effective freshman legislator who passionately advocated for farmers and families affected by rare diseases. Despite his commitment to public service, he maintained his preference for casual attire and activities close to home.
As he transitions to Indianapolis, McConnell emphasized that Braun remains committed to serving the people of Indiana while expressing gratitude for his six years of service in Washington.
"I know I speak for our colleagues when I thank Mike for his service these past six years," McConnell stated. "We wish him all the best in the next chapter."
