U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell has criticized the Biden Administration's decision to block the acquisition of U.S. Steel by Japan's Nippon Steel. In an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal, McConnell argues that this move compromises America's economic and national security interests in favor of organized labor politics.

McConnell stated, "By blocking what could have been a transformational investment in a critical U.S. industry weeks before his term ends, President Biden has saved some of the worst for last." He questions the administration's rationale that the proposed investment might "impair the national security of the United States," calling for "credible evidence" to support this claim.

The decision has raised concerns among American workers about foreign investments from close allies like Japan, which have historically contributed to job creation in states such as Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia. Highlighting examples from Georgetown, Kentucky—where Japanese firms like Toyota have invested significantly—McConnell questions why similar investments are considered security risks.

Japan's confusion over this decision is evident as they contrast it with recent U.S. approvals of military technology sales to Japan worth $3.64 billion. McConnell points out that even during heightened concerns over Japanese investments in the 1980s, transactions were approved under strict conditions to maintain U.S. production capabilities.

The senator references historical legislative debates on trade legislation and presidential review limits on foreign direct investment led by former Treasury Secretary James Baker. He suggests that President Biden ignored advice from national-security advisers who recommended not blocking Nippon Steel’s purchase.
