U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell has expressed relief over the release of American hostage Ryan Corbett, who had been held by the Taliban for 894 days. In a statement, McConnell praised those involved in securing Corbett's freedom, highlighting the efforts of Corbett's wife, Anna.
McConnell noted that he collaborated closely with Anna and their three children, as well as Ryan’s parents, Drue and Evelyn from Louisville, Kentucky. The family endured two years without celebrating holidays and milestones together. "After 894 harrowing days of wrongful detention by the Taliban, Ryan Corbett is finally coming home to his family," McConnell stated.
The senator emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to free Americans unjustly detained abroad. "While the Corbett family can rest easier today, we must continue to stand for the release of all Americans unjustly imprisoned in Afghanistan," he added.
McConnell previously addressed this issue on April 8, 2024, when he spoke on the Senate floor and introduced a resolution urging the Taliban to release Ryan Corbett immediately.
