U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, has expressed his views regarding Pete Hegseth's nomination as Secretary of Defense. In a statement released today, McConnell highlighted the critical nature of the role amid current global threats.

McConnell emphasized that "the most consequential cabinet official in any Administration is the Secretary of Defense," especially given today's significant challenges to U.S. national security interests. He noted that major adversaries are collaborating to undermine U.S. interests worldwide and questioned America's military capabilities and defense industrial capacity in deterring conflicts with nations like China or Russia.

The senator underscored the gravity of leading the United States Armed Forces and managing its supporting bureaucracy, referencing past leaders such as George Marshall and Bob Gates who have taken on this responsibility with humility.

McConnell critiqued Hegseth's qualifications, stating that "mere desire to be a ‘change agent’ is not enough" for the position. He expressed concerns about Hegseth's ability to manage nearly 3 million personnel and an annual budget approaching $1 trillion effectively.

According to McConnell, Hegseth has yet to prove he can meet these challenges. He criticized Hegseth's public comments and testimony before the Armed Services Committee for lacking acknowledgment of coordinated aggression from adversaries against American security.

The senator also mentioned President Trump's call for increased NATO defense spending but pointed out that Hegseth did not commit to enhancing America's defense investment beyond what was proposed by the Biden Administration.

McConnell noted gaps in Hegseth's strategic vision regarding potential Chinese aggression towards Taiwan or the Philippines and how to counter adversarial alliances with deeper relationships and industrial cooperation.

As Hegseth steps into his role as the 29th Secretary of Defense, McConnell highlighted ongoing issues such as Russian aggression in Europe and Iranian-backed terror in the Middle East. He stressed that restoring "warrior culture" should not involve replacing one set of culture warriors with another but should focus on equipping warfighters urgently.

Finally, McConnell expressed his hope for successful collaboration with Secretary Hegseth: “I wish Secretary Hegseth great success, and I look forward to working closely with him to restore American hard power."
