U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell from Kentucky has spoken out following his vote to repeal tariffs on Canada, which is Kentucky’s largest trade partner. McConnell criticized the tariff policy, stating, “As I have always warned, tariffs are bad policy, and trade wars with our partners hurt working people most. Tariffs drive up the cost of goods and services. They are a tax on everyday working Americans.”

McConnell emphasized the importance of cooperation with trade allies rather than opposing them. He remarked, "With so much at stake globally, the last thing we need is to pick fights with the very friends with whom we should be working with to protect against China’s predatory and unfair trade practices."

He highlighted the potential repercussions of tariffs for Kentucky's economy, mentioning the impact on the state’s 69,000 family farms and industries such as bourbon production, automotive, and manufacturing. McConnell argued, "Make no mistake: goods made in America will be more expensive to manufacture and, ultimately, for consumers to purchase, with higher broad-based tariffs."

Local storeowners in Kentucky have already reported rising prices from suppliers. Estimates suggest that tariffs could cost the average state resident up to $1,200 annually.

Caleb Ragland, president of the American Soybean Association and a Kentucky farmer, commented on the situation in the Wall Street Journal, stating, “It’s hitting us on all fronts. You’re talking about the potential of a flat-out crisis in rural America and the farm economy.” He noted the past impact of trade wars under the previous Trump administration, which led to significant losses in agricultural exports, particularly for soybeans.

McConnell has also expressed his stance against tariffs in publications such as the Courier Journal and Foreign Affairs magazine, indicating the financial strain tariffs impose on Kentuckians and questioning the strategic retreat these economic measures could represent for America.
