U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) recently paid tribute to fallen law enforcement officers on the Senate floor in observance of Police Week.
McConnell stated, "This week, thousands of law enforcement personnel from across America will descend on our nation’s capital to pay solemn tribute to comrades killed in the line of duty." He acknowledged that the entire nation joins them in honoring service and sacrifice as they mark National Peace Officers Memorial Day and add the names of fallen heroes to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington.
He extended a warm welcome to visiting officers and their families, expressing gratitude for their dedication to keeping communities safe. McConnell also paid special tribute to Deputy Caleb Conley of Scott County Sheriff’s Office, who was tragically shot and killed during a routine traffic stop in Georgetown, Kentucky a year ago.
"He leaves behind his wife and two children," McConnell said. "And yesterday, I had the privilege of meeting with members of the Conley family and assured them that their sacrifice is not forgotten."
The loss of these heroes, according to McConnell, leaves holes in tight-knit departments and devoted families. Their deaths serve as a reminder of the daily risks peace officers take to keep others safe.
"In this building," he said, "we are never far from men and women who swear oaths to run toward danger." He concluded by urging his colleagues to join him in thanking Capitol Police officers for their service and honoring those who have given their lives in defense of the institution.
