In a recent address on the Senate floor, U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) discussed the ongoing crisis at the southern border. "For three consecutive months, major national polls have ranked immigration as the most important problem facing our country. And this year, for the first time, a majority of Americans say they support erecting physical barriers along our southern border," he stated.
McConnell also noted that the Democratic Leader has indicated his intention to refocus Senate attention on the border crisis and bipartisan legislation Senator Lankford helped produce earlier this year. However, McConnell expressed skepticism about these efforts in light of previous actions taken by President Biden.
"But in his own remarks on the subject yesterday, my colleague from New York seemed to acknowledge what we all know: the keys to securing our southern border are already in the hands that created this crisis," McConnell said.
The Republican leader referred to comments made by the Democratic Leader who declared, "President Biden… is taking action to secure our border." Last week, he added that "the President began announcing a series of administrative actions."
Despite these affirmations from his Democratic counterpart, McConnell criticized President Biden's handling of the situation. He pointed out that nearly 5,000 people cross our border illegally each day despite three years of Biden's presidency.
"Of course, President Biden does have the authorities he needs to start rapidly undoing the damage of the historic crisis that’s unfolded on his watch. How do we know? Because he voluntarily took them off the table from Day One," McConnell argued.
He went on to list several measures which were abandoned by President Biden including 'Remain-in-Mexico', border wall construction supported by a majority of Americans and any signs that this Administration would like to actually secure the border.
In conclusion, McConnell stated: "Mr. President, the path out of deepening border crisis is actually not a mystery. It just requires a President who’s willing to stop digging."
