U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has expressed his opposition to Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear's recent comments advocating for the abolition of the Electoral College. In a statement released from Louisville, KY, McConnell criticized the Democratic Party's stance on constitutional issues.
"I wish I could say I’m surprised by Governor Beshear’s latest calls to abolish the Electoral College – but I’m not," McConnell stated. He accused Democrats of having a "disregard – and borderline disdain – for the constitutional guardrails that safeguard our political system."
McConnell argued that no institution is safe if it stands in the way of what he described as Democrat-led progressive reforms aimed at preserving democracy. He urged those concerned about the country's future to focus on strengthening rather than dismantling these constitutional structures.
"At its core, the Electoral College protects Americans from the whims of the majority," McConnell said, emphasizing its role in making national elections feasible and compelling presidents to govern with nationwide interests in mind. He warned that without it, presidential candidates might ignore smaller states like Kentucky in favor of larger states such as New York and California.
