U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has expressed his condolences following the death of Bernard "Bernie" Marcus. In a statement, McConnell shared that he and his wife, Elaine, were saddened by the news of Marcus's passing, describing him as both a friend and a notable American figure.
McConnell highlighted Marcus's life story as an embodiment of the American dream. "A son of immigrants made something out of nothing, and now leaves his entire nation better than he found it," said McConnell. He praised Marcus for his contributions to Atlanta, Georgia, where Marcus established a successful company and engaged in extensive philanthropic efforts.
Marcus is credited with creating numerous jobs across America. However, according to McConnell, Marcus was most proud of his dedication to "tzedakah," or charitable giving. His philanthropy supported various causes including autism and cancer research as well as veteran and community support.
The statement concluded with McConnell extending sympathies to Marcus's wife Billi and the entire family: "Countless lives improved and saved are an enduring testament to Bernie Marcus’ generosity."
