U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell was honored with the Irving Kristol Award at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) Annual Dinner held on November 12th in Washington, D.C. AEI President Robert Doar and Chairman of AEI’s Board of Trustees Daniel D’Aniello presented the award to McConnell.
During his acceptance speech, McConnell expressed gratitude towards AEI, stating, "Thank you to the entire Institute. You do important work that advances important ideas. I’m glad to be with you and I’m deeply honored by this recognition." He acknowledged the significance of receiving an award named after Irving Kristol, describing him as "among the last century’s greatest public intellectuals."
McConnell discussed the importance of enduring institutions being built on enduring ideas, emphasizing free markets, American primacy, and leadership as forces for security and prosperity. He stated, "Worthy institutions are built on worthwhile ideas. It’s impossible to preserve institutions that skip this step."
He addressed challenges faced by various institutions, including attacks on political speech and minority protections in the Senate. Highlighting his commitment to defending these principles, he remarked, "The power to block bad ideas is every bit as potent as the power to advance good ones."
McConnell also spoke about the role of American leadership in global peace and economic advancement over the past decades. He warned against isolationism and stressed the need for increased investment in defense to maintain stability worldwide.
In conclusion, McConnell reiterated his dedication to preserving American leadership through foundational ideas and thanked AEI for recognizing his efforts: "Once again, thank you very much for this great honor."
