U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell addressed the Senate floor, emphasizing the pressing agenda that needs attention before the 118th Congress adjourns. McConnell highlighted several key issues requiring immediate action.

"The first opportunities to work together are already upon us. The Senate has a great deal of outstanding business that we have to tackle in the coming weeks," McConnell stated.

A primary focus is passing the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which McConnell described as essential for setting national security priorities. "Every year, the NDAA gives Congress an indispensable opportunity to set national security priorities. This year, it’s a chance to show we appreciate the gravity of an especially dangerous moment," he said.

McConnell urged swift movement on this legislation, criticizing delays: "After months of needless dithering, I would urge the Democratic Leader to get this must-pass legislation moving without further delay."

In addition to defense matters, McConnell stressed the need for supplemental assistance for states and communities affected by recent natural disasters. He cited Kentucky's experience with severe weather as a reminder of why timely aid is crucial: "Kentucky knows the power and pain of severe storms and flooding. This year, the communities across the southeast recovering from major hurricane and flood damage deserve the Senate’s attention and support."

Another critical task is extending federal government funding before lawmakers break for holidays. McConnell warned against political maneuvers that could disrupt core government functions: "As I’ve said before, there is never political advantage to be gained from allowing core government functions to go dark."

He concluded by stressing that both parties must collaborate effectively to avoid leaving unresolved issues for future leadership: "The 119th Congress, and the 47th President, must not inherit a federal government in the middle of a funding crisis. The work ahead of us will require all parties to operate quickly and in good faith. The American people deserve nothing less."
