U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, representing Kentucky and serving as the Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, addressed the Senate floor to discuss America's interests in Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict. McConnell emphasized the significance of Ukraine's victory for U.S. interests, highlighting that "Ukraine’s victory and stability in Europe is squarely in the interest of the United States."
McConnell pointed out the potential negative consequences if Russia were to succeed in its invasion, stating, "the most harmful possible outcome of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – for U.S. interests – is a single headline: ‘Russia wins, America loses’." He expressed concerns about America's allies planning for a future where U.S. influence diminishes if support wanes.
The senator criticized actions that he believes have made it easier for Russia to target Ukraine, saying, "Freezing lethal assistance and intelligence support to Ukraine made Russia’s job easier." He warned against underestimating Putin's ambitions beyond eastern Ukraine and urged against repeating past mistakes from agreements like Minsk One and Two.
Addressing financial aspects, McConnell clarified that America's total spending related to Ukraine amounts to $175 billion and noted that European countries have allocated more aid relative to GDP than the United States. He stated that this investment has strengthened American security and alliances.
He argued that investments related to Ukraine have bolstered U.S. defense capabilities by saying, "Consider where most of that Ukraine-related spending – $120 billion – has gone: To investing in U.S. capabilities." McConnell also highlighted lessons learned from Ukrainian battlefield experiences as beneficial for future conflicts.
McConnell cautioned against confusing surrender with peace and stressed maintaining credibility globally: "To believe that we can torch our credibility in one region and not tarnish it in another is foolish." He called for holding Russia accountable for its aggression as part of achieving lasting peace.
Reflecting on historical leadership, McConnell referenced Ronald Reagan's approach during Cold War tensions: “Ronald Reagan epitomized peace through strength – by words and actions.” Concluding his remarks, he asserted firmly, “America cannot afford to get played.”
