U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, representing Kentucky, was recently awarded the Star of Ukraine Award, the U.S. Ukraine Foundation’s top honor, in recognition of his support for Ukraine. The award ceremony took place on March 27, 2025, and during the event, McConnell delivered remarks highlighting the strong relationship between the U.S. and Ukraine.
McConnell humorously noted, "I am so humbled by this recognition. Clearly, in the selection process, Nadia and Bob McConnell didn’t mind a bit of good old-fashioned nepotism!" He attributed the emergence of Ukraine as a sovereign democracy to a fortunate "coincidence" and praised the tireless efforts of the Ukrainian people to resist Russian influence.
The senator also acknowledged the contributions of the U.S. Ukraine Foundation, stating, "From Nadia and Bob’s vision grew an institution that has walked hand-in-hand with our Ukrainian friends at every step of the way."
McConnell reflected on his past support for nations behind the Iron Curtain and reiterated a message from President Reagan: "Your struggle is our struggle, your dream is our dream, and someday you, too, will be free." He underscored the importance of NATO and the trans-Atlantic alliance in maintaining the West’s defense.
He addressed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the broader implications for global security, remarking, "Peace is a noble goal. And few deserve it more than the people of Ukraine." McConnell warned against Western complacency, emphasizing, "Will the price of peace yet again be fawning Western weakness?"
Citing Margaret Thatcher’s insights from a 1985 address, McConnell stated, "Wars are not caused by the build up of weapons. They are caused when an aggressor believes he can achieve his objectives at an acceptable price."
Regarding recent challenges, McConnell noted that the Ukrainian military’s adaptation is crucial for reshaping future warfare. "Turning our backs on such capable partners isn’t just immoral. It’s self-defeating," he commented.
Finally, McConnell called for robust U.S. support for Ukraine, saying, "Imagine Ukraine’s leverage today if the West had armed it to the teeth from the get-go."
His speech concluded with a reference to historical perspectives, urging unwavering alliances and cautioning against underestimating the significance of American defense commitments.
