WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) delivered remarks on the Senate floor today, emphasizing the need to prevent a harmful and unnecessary government shutdown.

McConnell stated, “With just hours to spare, the Senate is now in a position to prevent a harmful and unnecessary government shutdown."

He further outlined the importance of passing a straightforward, short-term funding extension that allows for continued discussions on various outstanding priorities. These priorities include securing supplemental relief for natural disaster victims, restoring security at the southern border, restraining reckless spending by the President, and providing Ukraine with the necessary assistance to repel Russia’s invasion.

McConnell reaffirmed the commitment of Senate Republicans to support Ukraine and invest in American strength to deter strategic adversaries like China. He expressed confidence in passing further urgent assistance to Ukraine later this year.

Highlighting the consequences of a government shutdown, McConnell warned, “The alternative to our action today, an entirely avoidable government shutdown, would not just pause our progress on these important priorities. It would actually set them back and saddle the people we represent with unnecessary hardships."

McConnell commended the House of Representatives for taking action on a continuing resolution that maintains critical government functions at their current rates of operation. Passing this measure and keeping the lights on will allow the Senate to focus on advancing full-year appropriations and meeting urgent supplemental priorities both domestically and internationally.

McConnell concluded by urging his colleagues to support this crucial step in the right direction.
