U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) delivered a critical speech on the Senate floor today, focusing on the Biden administration's decision to withhold military assistance to Israel.
McConnell began his remarks by reflecting on the horrors of war and its impact on societies and civilizations. He highlighted the efforts of "civilized nations" like the United States and Israel to minimize harm to civilians during conflicts, contrasting these with groups such as Hamas, which he referred to as "savages."
"Our ally, Israel, goes to great lengths to avoid civilian casualties," McConnell said. "But the forces sworn to erase Israel from the earth follow a different code."
He further criticized Hamas for their tactics, stating that they view civilian casualties not as tragedies but as tools of warfare. McConnell accused Hamas of exploiting human suffering and manipulating media coverage.
"Why does Hamas behave this way? Because it works," he said. "Because they know it creates an international rush to blame Israel."
McConnell also expressed concern over President Biden's decision to withhold military aid from Israel amidst ongoing conflict. He argued that this move contradicts Biden's claims of having an 'ironclad' commitment to supporting Israel.
"The President is old enough to remember 1968, but he seems to have learned the wrong lessons of that pivotal year," McConnell stated. "He cannot claim his support for Israel is ‘ironclad’ while denying Israel precisely the weapons they need to defend themselves."
The Republican leader warned that this decision could have grave consequences, potentially causing other allies who rely on America's guarantees to question its commitment and prompting nations in conflict zones to seek security elsewhere.
"If the Commander-in-Chief can’t muster the political courage to stand up to radicals on his left flank and stand up for an ally at war, the consequences will be grave," McConnell concluded.
