U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell expressed his opposition to an Administration policy during today's Senate Rules Committee markup. McConnell stated that the policy is designed to force American taxpayers to violate their rights of conscience and cautioned against involving the military in politically divisive subjects.

McConnell specifically addressed the response of a colleague from Alabama, stating that it is not the appropriate approach to address the issue. He emphasized that challenging an executive action in the courts and electing a different President are the usual courses of action. McConnell also criticized his colleague for exerting leverage on career military officers who have no influence over the Administration's policy priorities.

The holds placed on nominations currently affect 370 active duty positions, and if left unaddressed, it could impact 90% of the senior-most military commanders by the end of the year. McConnell stressed the importance of putting experienced commanders in command in a timely manner, as the challenges faced by the United States around the world require effective leadership.

While McConnell expressed gratitude for colleagues proposing plausible solutions to the situation, he believes that the best path forward would be one that clears the nominations backlog while preserving opposition to the Administration's policy. He acknowledged that productive discussions are ongoing and suggested allowing them to continue.

Although McConnell appreciated the standing order proposal being considered by the Committee, he stated his opposition to taking that route at the present moment.

As discussions continue, it remains to be seen how the Senate will address the nominations backlog and navigate the opposition to the Administration's policy.
