WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) addressed the Senate floor today, expressing his concerns about the involvement of some American Democrats in Israeli domestic politics and the ongoing conflict in the region.
McConnell highlighted the unity among Israelis in supporting military operations against Hamas, stating, "More than five months after the butchery of October 7th, Israelis are overwhelmingly united behind their government’s unity war cabinet in support of ongoing military operations against Hamas."
He criticized some Democrats for their vocal opposition to Israel's unity government, emphasizing, "By contrast, some prominent American Democrats are increasingly vocal in their belief that Israel’s unity government and voters are wrong."
The Republican Leader accused Democratic colleagues of having an "anti-Israel problem" rather than merely disagreeing with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating, "As I said last week, our Democratic colleagues don’t have an anti-Bibi problem. They have an anti-Israel problem."
McConnell placed the responsibility for the violence and humanitarian crisis in the region squarely on Hamas, asserting, "This violence, and this humanitarian crisis, rest entirely on the shoulders of Hamas."
Throughout his remarks, McConnell emphasized the importance of respecting Israel's sovereignty and allowing the country to make its own decisions regarding the ongoing conflict. He criticized any attempt by American politicians to interfere in Israeli politics, urging a focus on supporting Israel in bringing peace and security to its citizens.
In conclusion, McConnell urged for a unified effort to address the root cause of the conflict, stating, "Until then, Israel’s unity government ought to continue to do what the overwhelming majority of Israelis expect of it: Bring the innocents home. Bring the terrorists to justice. And bring peace and security to its citizens. And, I might add, pay the peanut gallery no mind."
