WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) addressed the Senate floor today, emphasizing the importance of addressing the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas. McConnell highlighted the Biden Administration's approach to migration at the southern border, quoting Secretary Mayorkas's statement: “’[W]e do have a plan to address migration at the southern border. We’re executing it… and we’re starting to see the results.’"
McConnell criticized the administration's handling of border security, pointing out the surge in illegal arrivals and the repeal of previous border security policies. He expressed concern over the Senate's role in assessing Secretary Mayorkas's involvement in the crisis, stating, “Today it falls to the Senate to determine whether and to what extent Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas enabled and inflamed this crisis."
The Republican leader urged his colleagues to take their roles as jurors seriously and not shy away from their responsibilities. McConnell emphasized the significance of considering the articles of impeachment brought before the Senate and rendering a fair judgment. He stated, “Tabling articles of impeachment would be unprecedented in the history of the Senate. It’s as simple as that."
As the Senate faces the task of deliberating on the impeachment proceedings, McConnell called on all members to prioritize the thorough consideration of the charges at hand. He concluded by urging his fellow senators to uphold their duties and ensure a diligent review of the impeachment case, saying, “I, for one, intend to take my role as a juror in this case seriously. And I urge my colleagues to do the same."
